Question 7:
When I run CMS-PC 4.0, I keep getting the message that my FILES= statement needs to be set to 99 even though I know my statement is set correctly. What’s going on?

Answer:
This error message can be caused by either a lack of memory, or conflicting use of DOS’ SHARE program. Please follow the below steps to troubleshoot this problem:

1. Make sure your computer meets all the requirements discussed on page 13 of the User’s Guide (to see if Windows is running in enhanced mode, choose Help>About Program Manager from Program Manager’s menu bar). Additionally, double check your CONFIG.SYS and, if applicable, your SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG settings as discussed on page 14 of the User’s Guide.

2. If your computer meets CMS-PC’s 4.0's requirements, and you are now double sure that your configuration files are set properly, the problem is most likely due to a conflict with the SHARE program. SHARE.EXE is most often loaded when your computer processes the AUTOEXEC.BAT file at boot time.

3. To edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file select File>Run from Program Manager’s menu bar (Windows’95 users select Start>Run). In the text box where your cursor is now flashing, enter SYSEDIT and choose OK (sysedit does not have to be in all upper case).

4. The System Configuration Editor appears. Within the System configuration editor, the AUTOEXEC.BAT window will initially appear as the forefront (active) window.

5. Using your cursor arrow keys or the scroll bar on the AUTOEXEC.BAT window, locate the line where SHARE is being loaded. This line may appear with the word SHARE by itself, or something like C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE, LH C:\DOS\SHARE or LOADHIGH C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE. If you cannot find SHARE being loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT proceed to step 6, otherwise if you found your SHARE statement, skip to step 9.

6. SHARE is sometimes loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file at boot time. To find the SHARE statement in your CONFIG.SYS file, follow steps 7 through 8.

7. From the Window menu of the System Configuration Editor choose CONFIG.SYS. The contents of your CONFIG.SYS file will now become the forefront (active) window.

8. Scroll through this window and find where SHARE is being loaded. It will probably look something like DEVICE=C:\DOS\SHARE or DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\SHARE. If you cannot locate the SHARE statement, then your computer is not using the SHARE program, and you need to call Technical Support at 817-475-2945.

9. If your SHARE statement is followed by parameters (any symbols, numbers or words after the word SHARE (or SHARE.EXE) write them down on a piece of paper. We must replace these parameters in order to get CMS-PC™ 4.0 running, and it is always a good idea to know what the original statement was when you are editing your computer’s configuration files. Optionally, you can make a backup copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file before you begin editing it.

10. Modify your SHARE statement so that the following are the only parameters (nothing else besides these follows the word SHARE or SHARE.EXE) of your SHARE statement /F:4096 /L:500 Make sure there is a space after the word SHARE (or SHARE.EXE) and between the 4096 and the /L in the parameters we just added.

11. Close the System Configuration editor and answer Yes when prompted to save the changes.

12. You must now exit Windows and reboot your computer in order for the changes to take effect. If the problem persists, please contact Technical Support at 817-475-2945.
