CMS-PC 4.0 Software
Tips & Tricks Tips & Tricks

Question 1:
How do I move CMS-PC 4.0 from my local computer to a network and set up additional workstations to use it?

Answer:
There are several steps for moving CMS-PC 4.0 to a network server and setting up individual workstations to use the software. You should be somewhat computer literate to perform some of these steps. If you do not feel comfortable in executing the steps below, contact your network administrator or give us a call and we will help walk you through them.

1. Use the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer for Win 95 users) to move all of the files and folders in the CMS4 directory on your local computer to your network drive. Make sure you actually MOVE the files, not just COPY them.

A few things to remember: Make sure the network drive you are using provides full access to the people who will be accessing it. Workstations will need read, write, edit and delete access to the network drive to be able to run CMS-PC 4.0. Also, make sure the network drive chosen is backed up frequently.

2. Once CMS-PC 4.0 is moved to a network drive, you must change the properties of the CMS-PC 4.0 icon on your desktop to reflect the new location of the CMS4.EXE file, as well as the working directory. You may also have to find the CMS-PC 4.0 icon (located in the CMS4 directory).

3. After CMS-PC 4.0 has been moved and the icon properties reset, double-click the CMS-PC 4.0 icon. You will receive a message that CMS-PC 4.0 cannot find a file. Your next steps will be to locate three of CMS-PC 4.0 files (one found in each of the three CMS-PC 4.0 directories).

  • When you get the message: "The file DATADICT.DBF could not be found in C:\CMS4/", choose Ok.
  • Next you will get the message: "Would you like to locate the file DATADICT.DBF?", choose Locate.
  • When you get the dialogue box to "Open the file DATADICT.DBF", look on your network drive for the CMS4 directory and you will find a file named DATADICT.DBF. Click on it and choose Open.
  • You will have to go through these same steps two more times to locate a file named "BUSPROC.DBF" (locate it on the network in the CMS4\DATABSE directory) and again for the file named CMS_RQST.DBF (locate it in the CMS4\REPORTS directory).
  • After locating these three files, CMS-PC 4.0 will run properly because it now recognizes the correct location for all of its files.

4. After locating CMS-PC 4.0’s files on your network, enter the User Id and Password (CMS & CMS) to start CMS-PC 4.0. For every user you will set up a workstation for, you will want to create a new User Id and Password for them.

  • At the CMS-PC 4.0 Main Menu, make sure you already have a Dataset created (there should be a Dataset Id next to "Id:" at the very top of the CMS-PC 4.0 screen. (If you do not have a Dataset Id at the top of the screen, choose File, Open and select a Dataset - or create one if necessary.)
  • Choose Utilities, User Security. Use this screen to type a new User Id and Password for each of your new CMS-PC 4.0 users. You must give each user a User Id and Password plus assign them a security level. The security levels you can assign are: "1" - Supervisor rights with full access to CMS-PC 4.0 (the same as the "CMS" User Id). "2" - Manager rights with rights to make revisions to only the departments in the datasets you assign them, plus run reports. "3" - Read-only rights with access to only view the departments in the datasets you assign them, cannot run reports.
  • Save the User Ids and Passwords you create and write them down somewhere. ICMS does not know your User Ids and Passwords and cannot provide them if called.
  • Save and exit the User Security module, then choose File, Exit from the CMS-PC 4.0 Main Menu.

5. CMS-PC 4.0 has now been moved to the network and User Ids and Passwords have been set up for your new users. Follow these steps to set up each workstation:

  • File Handle/Buffer Settings -
In the client’s CONFIG.SYS file, the FILES= statement must be set to at least 99 and the BUFFERS= statement must be set to at least 10. Do not use the secondary DOS buffers option (see page 14 of the User’s Guide for more details). Additionally, for Novell networks, if the NET.CFG (or the SHELL.CFG) file contain a FILES= statement, it also must be set to at least 99. Make sure these files are configured properly, and you must reboot in order for any changes to take affect.
  • Copying required files to the client’s system -
There are three files that need to be copied to the client’s WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory. All of these files can be found in the directory CMS-PC was installed on. These three files are FOXPRINT.TTF, FOXPRINT.FOT and FOXFONT.FON.
  • Create the client’s icons -
On the client’s computer, an icon must be created to give the end user easy access to the CMS-PC 4.0 program. Create an icon the way you normally would in a convenient location for the client. The Command Line of the icon’s properties should point to: drive letter:\CMS4\CMS4.EXE. The working directory can be left blank, or you can insert drive letter:\CMS4.

Your network client is now ready to run CMS-PC 4.0.
